Cancun. Would you believe it? I am back in sunny Mexico again and I ask myself surely I have seen some of the best parts of Mexico already? In fairness the long road trips had taken their toll on me and I was in need of some regular sun, sea and sand but I am desperado to finally see a beach of some sort. What better place then the white sands of Cancun?!
One thing I wasn’t prepared for in Cancun was how americanised based it is! It’s certainly not as cheap as Mexico City was either. They also use and accept the US Dollar here so on top of me using up my Pesos I had saved up from my previous visit to Mexico reality is starting to sink in again as it’s now dawning on me this maybe a relaxing stay all well and good but a expensive one as well also!
It was a late night check in at my budget hotel this time round. I literally rocked up gone midnight and was hopeful somebody would be at the reception desk to which fortunately there was! I got fixed up with a room with a leaky toilet which I put up with for all of two days. I kicked up a fuss and got upgraded to a more glamourous room with a non-leaky toilet and an actual shower that worked properly! Us English won’t have it any other way!
There was the opportunity of going to Chimichiniza but it did look like a dead ringer for Tikal all over again so no point. I didn’t fancy Tulum either or any of the tours of that type during my time here as this was going to be strictly sunbathing and chill out time based relaxation trip as I had been on the road constantly on off for day’s on end. Only problem I had to contend with is it’s wet season typically here in Cancun. Fan ffntastic!! I was lucky to be fair as the weather was reasonably warm all week but it did rain a fair bit also! The relaxing week I had in mind of sunbathing all day simply wasn’t going to be happening. If anything this started to make me contemplate maybe I should of invested in going to Costa Rica afterall instead. It’s expensive there I heard but no diffedent to here and at least would of got some better weather!
Cancun loves a hotel. There are hundreds of diff types of hotels here and it can start to get very predictable after a while. It’s easy to get around on the buses there as it’s just one big loop up and down the sea front past the hotels. The boat trip also to Islamujeres is certainly well worth doing and the island itself was much more my bag anyway. I actually preferred Islamujeres more then Cancun believe it or not. The beach there is defo worth seeing and try grab a massage off of the masseurs on the beach also if you can. Cheaper then the Cancun lot were, put it that way!
It was here where I was starting to first notice my hair was growing abnormally longer there I have ever had it before. This meant having to get it tied up in local salons as I hadn’t got round to learning how to actually tie it up yet! Majority did it for free but some charged me around a dollar to do so and bung in some product/hairspray also. I want to use this trip to change my appearance without a care in the world, give myself a new outlook on life and finally make myself a better person. So far I think I have achieved that but however you can take the boy out of Essex but you can’t take Essex out of the boy! Essex being the L.A. of England according to a well known ex Towie cast member Mr. Wright.
I needed a night out and on my way back from the island I met another Texan who was in Cancun on a friends hen do at the bus stop. They mentioned a good place to hang out was the famous ‘Coco Bongos’ which is well known club heard about around the world to most. You pay $60 on door and the rest of your night in there is free. Your going to spend around that figure in there if not more anyways but it did bring back a painful memory of when I paid £50 on the door of Zoo Bar in London just for entry on New Years Eve once! At Cocos though it was all drinks included. Not exclusive drinks though I should add. The cheap and nasty whisky, rum and vodka type I am afraid.
I managed to meet the Texans in there by pot luck and it was lucky I did as it was packed out to the max! Funnily enough I also bumped into two Israeli chicks I had met on the mini speedboat on my way back from San Pedro in Guatemala a few weeks back. They were far too drunk to remember any convo we had on way back that day and don’t actually think they recognised me to be fair. It’s true what they say. It is indeed a small world! The drink itself was going down nicely and partied in he night away! My head was in bits the next day! Went way over the top and regretted all those sinful fluids my body had to endure.
In fairness that’s it on Cancun. I never got round to catching up with Greg on Islamujeres as I was just there for a few hours. I expected probably more then I got in Cancun but it was still nice to visit both beaches to get some kinda tan going. Weather was just a bit too wet though majority of week.
It was time to pack up my things and head on to ‘ECUADOR’ said in same expression as that blokes voice in that famous SASH music video back at school! Remember them?! Quito and Galápagos Islands awaits El Gringo! It’s getting closer then ever. I still also need to think about how I’m fitting in Colombia also towards end of the trip being as I’m flying over it to get to Ecuador and what with Galápagos booked already in advance that has priority of course.
It’s time to get used to that high altitude as it will be a big thing to adapt to in Peru and Bolivia also. Next stop is Quitoooooooo!
